Matchweek 36

English teams dominating Europe and can Arsenal finish?

“Just when I think you couldn't possibly be any DUMBER, you go and do something like this... and TOTALLY REDEEM YOURSELF!” - (Arsenal fans to Evertonians)

Wow wow wow, if any of our readers had expected City to barely pull off a tie against Everton, give yourself a pat on the back. Arsenal now sit 5 points over City (who have a game in hand) and control their own destiny. The Gunners now are overwhelming favorites to become champions of England. Oh and they are in the Champions League final if you care about that stuff.

On other side of the table, Tottenham earned a huge win over Villa and saw their rivals West Ham thrashed by Brentford.

Both Spurs and Arsenal have a bit of a “just tappppp it in” putt energy about them…let’s see if they can make in the whole when it counts

🔴 Liverpool vs 🦁 Chelsea — 4:30 AM — USA
Two shells of former selves…
Liverpool host Chelsea at Anfield on Saturday still needing to secure Champions League football… after last weekend's 3-2 loss to United ended a three-match winning streak, Slot will want a response. It's been a ROUGH title defense all around with 11 league defeats, 18 losses across all competitions, AND they've given up two+ goals in 16 League games this season. Chelsea, (not to be outdone), are arriving as genuinely one of the most out-of-form sides….like ever. Six straight Premier League losses, scoreless in five of them, Rosenior sacked, and caretaker Calum McFarlane's second stint in charge got off to a 3-1 loss to a heavily rotated Forest side. Oh and there’s more… no one can even remember their last clean sheet... they've conceded in each of their last 13 league games, with a run like that not seen since a 17-game stretch back in 1991. João Pedro’s incredible… nay spectacular stoppage-time overhead kick against Forest did little to cheer anyone up… his 15 league goals are genuinely the only good news story at Stamford Bridge right now. Liverpool are heavy favorites and probably should win this comfortably.

Must wins for both teams.
Arsenal head to the London Stadium on Sunday knowing the title is so close they can taste it. Three games remaining, and this is arguably the trickiest of the lot. West Ham are firmly planted in the relegation zone and desperately need points, which means they have that desperate wounded animal energy you don't want to face in a title run-in. The good news for Arsenal? Their recent away record against the Hammers is frankly absurd; 6-0 in 2023-24, and 5-2 last season. Butttttt West Ham have gone unbeaten in their last six home games, their longest such run since their final season at Upton Park in 2015-16. Desperate team, rowdy home crowd, title on the line… Sign me up.

🐓 Tottenham vs 🦉 Leeds — 12:00 PM — USA
Three wins in a row?!?
Tottenham in 2026 have went from being like “no thanks I don’t like winning”, to “please can I have a third helping”? From looking hopeless just weeks ago, now they have a chance at three consecutive wins which would be their best run since February 2025. In recent history Spurs have won eight of their last nine league meetings with Leeds, including five straight. But that was the OLD Leeds. The NEW Leeds are looking pretty pretty good. As a matter of fact they are quietly one of the form teams in the league; unbeaten in six, only three teams have lost fewer games since December, and they're a promoted side that has already put together a seven-game unbeaten run this season, something no promoted team has done twice in a single campaign since Middlesbrough in 1998-99. Spurs need the points badly. Leeds have absolutely nothing to fear. Should be a brilliant watch.

Extra Slice

Three Finals. Three English Clubs. Never Been Done Before.

English football is having a moment. For the first time ever, three English clubs have reached the finals of all three UEFA competitions in the same season. Arsenal sealed their Champions League final spot with a 2-1 aggregate win over Atlético Madrid, Villa overcame a 1-0 first leg deficit to thrash Nottingham Forest 4-1 on aggregate and book a Europa League final against Freiburg in Istanbul on May 20, and Crystal Palace….yes Crystal Palace…beat Shakhtar Donetsk across two legs to set up a Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano on May 27.

It has genuinely never happened before. Last season came close, with Chelsea winning the Conference League and Spurs beating United in the Europa League final, but Arsenal fell to eventual champions PSG in the Champions League semis. This time, all three teams made it to the ships.

For some historical context: the closest any country has come to this was Italy, who put clubs in all three finals back in 2023… but lost the lot. England has had multiple clubs in European finals before (the 2019 Champions League and Europa League finals were both all-English affairs) but never across all three competitions simultaneously. The last time English clubs won two of three available European trophies in a single season was 1984, when Liverpool won the European Cup and Spurs won the UEFA Cup. So even getting to three finals is uncharted territory.

Whatever may come of the matches, English football should be able to shrug off the haters who say the league has lost its strenght. Right now, English football is planting its flag all over Europe and it's pretty fun to watch.
